The Faculty of Health Sciences at UCT has the oldest medical school in Southern Africa. Its core business is research in medical and allied fields. The Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences has ten divisions -

The activities of the Clinical Laboratory Services include the teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students, conducting basic and applied research and the provision of diagnostic laboratory services.

Boasting accredited international standard, they provide diagnostic pathology services to the private and public medical sector as well as industry. They process more than 18,000 patients a day, with pathology services ranging from sophisticated molecular and cytogenetic investigations to advanced chemical analyses.
They have eighty specialist pathologists, each with their area of expertise, esuring quality and validity of investigations. These specialist pathologists also offer a valuable consultative service to medical colleagues, managed healthcare institutions, the insurance industry and to the occupational health environment.
A network of nursing staff also offer a phlebotomy service in private and public sector hospitals and clinics, as well as strategically placed depots. Couriers are also provided to all these regions, collecting specimens from medical practices and depots.
