The SABS food laboratories have a team of experienced and well qualified experts who offer chemical, microbiological and physical tests as well as evaluations and trials. They perform a wide range of tests on crops, grain, raw meat, milk beverages, water, processed foods and bulk foods daily.
They are a statutory body established in terms of the Standards Act, 1945 (Act No. 24 of 1945) and are the national institution for the promotion and maintenance of standardization and quality in connection with commodities and the rendering of services.
They have aligned their activities with seven different industry sectors, each housing the whole range of SABS services pertinent to a particular industry.
Some of their tests include -
- microbiological testing of foods, food products, water and swabs for contamination and for the presence of pathogenic organisms
- antimicrobial efficacy testing of disinfectants used in the food industry
- pesticides residues
- nutrients and proximate analyses
- vitamins
- veterinary drug residues …… and others
