They are the representative body that looks after the interests of the large number of laboratories in South Africa. Their objectives are to be a truly representative association for accredited and non-accredited laboratories and their logo reflects the various facets of the body.
Some of their activities are -
The establishment of an Excellence Award scheme for members
The nomination of specialists for training courses, particularly with regard to the Technical Centre for Excellence in Metrology
The provision of technical forums in the form of combined testing and calibration workshops.
The pathology departments and laboratories of the medical schools of the varius universities form part of the NHLS and are involved in research, teaching and training and the provision of diagnostic services to the hospitals in which they teach their students.
